IFR: Post-COVID Recovery Raises Demand for Robotics Skills

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) said Aug. 6, 2020, that demand for robotics skills is rising as economies recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

What happened

The IFR said the recovery from COVID-19 is accelerating robot adoption and increasing demand for skills to work with robots and automation systems. An Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey rated South Korea, Estonia, Singapore and Germany as advanced in education policies for an automated economy, while Japan, the United States and France were classified as developed countries.

Why it matters

How to restructure school education and corporate training to develop workers who can operate robots and intelligent automation systems is a key issue. The IFR says that as robot adoption increases further during the recovery, workers need not only retraining but also skills aligned with industry demand starting in primary and university education.
